EnerLogic® Window Film Gets an A+ from California School

Although the windows in Clovis Unified School District’s Buchanan High School provide much appreciated views to the outdoors, the district’s maintenance department was noticing more complaints about uncomfortably hot indoor temperatures.
Built in 1993, Buchanan high School is a two-story building with original, single-glaze, non-tinted windows. Solar heat gain through the windows contributed to raising indoor temperatures, making students and staff members uncomfortable in classrooms and offices. The HVAC system couldn’t keep up with the amount of cooling required in the space due in part to heat coming in through the windows.
But as much as the school wanted to reduce solar heat gain, staff members didn’t want to do anything that would darken the glass, obstruct views, or reduce daylight coming into the space.


After discussing various window film options with the local dealer, Clovis Unified School District selected Enerlogic® 35 for its low-e insulating properties and the ability to retain the school’s exterior aesthetics. After installing Enerlogic 35 on a few school office windows to test the results, Clovis Unified School District Maintenance Manager Chris Petty says he received great reviews from staff about the film right away. 
From the day it was installed, staff members noticed an immediate increase in comfort levels. Heat levels had dropped significantly. 
Because the test was successful, Enerlogic 35 window film was included in the school’s 2012 modernization project. The goal of the retrofit was to reduce energy use across the building’s 440,000 square feet, specifically focusing on HVAC efficiency. Buchanan High School also qualified for government rebates and incentives, making window film installation an even more realistic option. After the project was complete, more than 12,000 square feet of film had been installed on the south, east, and west sides of the school.


The window film provided a uniform look for the exterior of the building without darkening the windows or adding any shine. Because the window film doesn’t block views, students and staff were still able to enjoy the outdoor scenery and benefit from the daylight coming into the space. The film also eliminated hot spots throughout the school, offering a more consistent indoor temperature.  
Because the window film was installed as part of an overall energy-efficiency project  that included HVAC and lighting upgrades along with other sustainability improvements, the school isn’t tracking energy savings specifically from window film. But Clovis Unified School District Energy Management Coordinator Stuart Ogren is confident that window film is reducing energy use and saving the district money.
“It makes sense,” says Orgen. “Once the solar heat gain is reduced, our air-conditioners don’t have to work as hard; the cooling can be used elsewhere because it’s on a central plant.”
